Logbook entry: Wasilla to Barrow: Bikers, cop, stewardess, Denali Italian tourist, salty ice and more

While driving down Lucille Street shortly after I left my house, very close to Metro Cafe, I saw these kids coasting past the King of Kings Evangelical Lutheran Church.

As happens most everytime I drive to Anchorage and often just around Wasilla, I came across a cop stop. I think we've all been there, sitting at the side of the road on the wrong side of the ticket tablet.

Just before take-off, a stewardess at the front of the plane closed the door to the cockpit.

As soon as we climbed above the clouds we could see Denali, flanked by Foraker on the far left and Hunter in the middle. I got a jolt when the pilot announced that if passengers could look out to the left, they would see Mt. Mc... Mt. Mckiii... Mt Mckiiiiiii...

Oh, hell. I can't even type out the word.

Denali...

...a beautiful name for a beautiful mountain.

Stewardess, baby and tourist from Italy.

After we arrived in Barrow, I went to Sam & Lee's for dinner. I had eaten lunch late at the airport - a very juicy and delicious McDonald's double-quarter pounder, so I wanted something light, like a bowl of soup.

Tom Mahoney, brother to Abby of Abby's Home Cooking, was also dining at Sam & Lee's. He had flown in on the same flight as me and was on his way to Wainwright, where he works for the Olgoonik Corporation. Tom said he had eaten breakfast at Abby's just this morning.

After dinner, I walked down to the ocean. A lot sure happened out there this spring and I missed it all.

I continued to walk and saw this kid pedalling past the lagoon - almost certainly the child and grandson of someone I know.

I had left Wasilla in a hurry and forgot to put on my jacket so I was wearing a t-shirt covered by a sweat shirt. It was about 10:00 PM by now. I don't know what the temperature was, but there was a genuine nip in the air. It didn't matter. The sun, the cool air, the breeze... it all felt wonderful to me.
