The Daily School Bus: Parked outside the bus barn across the street from Barrow High School

...at 10:10 AM this morning.

I saw my first school bus as I walked to breakfast this morning little bit after 7:30, but my iPhone was in my pocket. By the time I could get it out and activate the camera the bus had turned the corner before it ever even reached me. Buses would have been rolling regularly for a while after that, but I was tied up getting situated and didn't see any of them.

Don't worry. There will be plenty more buses for me to snap in Barrow.

Barrow beneath the half-moon

Downtown Barrow, Alaska, beneath the half-moon. The temperature is 19° - above zero. Very, very, warm for this time of year, but standing in the stiff breeze it does not feel all that warm. The big storm blew in a bunch of warm air. I suspect it will cool down pretty fast now, but I haven't heard the forecast yet.

Ice surf

Before I arrived, they had a hellacious windstorm here in Barrow and all along Alaska's Arctic Coast. The west wind holds a blanket of slush ice tight to the shore. It is a little hard to tell in the dark, but the slush ice appears to extend a couple of hundred yards out. Beyond that, my eyes could make out frothing surf as waves broke but my iPhone could not pick it up. The surf would then collide with the ice blanket and lift it up into slush swells as it rolled toward the shore where each wave rises one last time and then tumbles to the beach in a cascade of churning slush and small ice chunks.

Logbook: Wasilla to Barrow, entry 2: I was not last to board

As noted in the previous entry, I arrived at Ted Stevens International Airport a little behind schedule, thanks to the icy highway. I was not the last to board but pretty close to it. I would still have had plenty of time to complete this Instagram and transfer both it and the previous one to my blog, plus take a new picture of happenings in the plane as we awaited departure and to post it as well, but of course there were many familiar faces onboard. I got involved in visiting and now we are in the sky. I will not be able to post this until sometime after we arrive in Barrow. I thought I would wait for my afternoon coffee until I got on the plane. The Stewardess just informed me there is no hot water, hence no coffee.

Logbook, Wasilla to Barrow, entry 1: On the drive to Ted Stevens International Airport, I see The Daily School Bus

The original text for this has disappeared. Oh well. The essence was that I left Wasilla about 2:35 hours before I was scheduled to depart Ted Stevens International Airport for Barrow. It usually takes close to one hour to reach the airport from our house, but the highway was so slick and scary that it took an hour and 40 to 45 minutes. This put me at the airport in the danger zone where one can miss their flight. But I got on.

I Instagrammed this on the plane and tried to post the picture with a "More Later" title just as they made us turn our phones off. I had hoped the picture would post, but it didn't until after I landed in Barrow and entered a wi-fi environment.
